Couture - What is it and is it for you?

You have been trying to find the perfect dress but none of the dresses you have seen fit the image in your mind, then having a one off gown designed especially for you is the way to go - whether it be a Bridal Gown, Mother of the Bride or Groom outfit, Evening Dress or School Formal then Couture may be the way for you. Couture is a one off garment designed specifically with your tastes, ideas and body shape to fit you perfectly.

“We Cater To Brides of all Shapes and Sizes”

My garment design and construction process goes through several stages, with client input at each stage ensuring client satisfaction with the complete garment.

Each bride meets with me personally in a complimentary consultation to discuss her vision for the perfect gown for the perfect day. At this stage the bride can bring in any pictures, sketches or ideas that they may have, and I will discuss possible designs, fabrics and embellishments (such as beading and embroidery) for their gown. I can recommend styles, fabrics and colours to suit the most elegant, sophisticated or simple gown.

As each gown is individually made to a perfect fit, subsequent fittings are required: once you are booked in, measurements are taken, the design is drawn up and the pattern designed to specifically fit the client. We then go on to the 'toile' stage. The toile is a calico replica of the garment created to correct any shaping issues, and also works as a trial run, allowing the client to see the design on and make any changes.  This gives my clients the freedom to make subtle changes such as necklines, sleeve shapes etc before materials.  Each gown is then constructed and embellished by hand to ensure the finest quality.

I have a range of fabrics and fabric samples in house to ensure that each bride has a unique gown with sourcing the finest laces, bridal fabrics and tulle’s to help with the creation of the perfect individual gown.

Common Mistakes People Make Regarding a Bridal Gown in Brisbane

Unfortunately, we see brides take several missteps when it comes to their Brisbane bridal wear. We always recommend that you avoid the following mistakes:

  • Timing: We understand that many brides are excited to start their search for bridal wear in Brisbane. However, it’s vital that you time your visit to our boutique around different details. For example, you may want to wait until you have a date so we can show you weather-appropriate styles. If you are planning for an outdoor wedding, you will undoubtedly be uncomfortable if you happen to pick out a dress that has long sleeves. Conversely, make sure that you don’t wait too long to come to our bridal shop in Brisbane. You want to leave yourself enough time to find the perfect dress and make any necessary alterations.

  • Bringing too many people to the appointment: Shopping for your wedding dress is an exciting event; however, the occasion can turn sour quickly if you bring too many people with you to try on dresses. Although our team is happy to accommodate your party of three, too many opinions about your dress selection could lead you to shy away from a dress you truly love.

  • Neglecting to set a budget

A History of Bridal Wear in Brisbane

Brisbane bridal wear has grown and developed since its original creation. Here are a few fun facts about this much-loved wedding garment:

  • The white dress: Did you know that white has not always been the traditional colour of a wedding dress? Up until the early 19th century, brides wore dresses in a variety of colours. Most brides needed to create their own dresses and designing a dress in white usually meant that they could only wear it a handful of times before it was stained or damaged beyond repair. It wasn’t until Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840 that white started to become the colour associated with wedding gowns. The pair were a young and fashionable couple, and droves of women around the world tried to follow their example.

  • World War II-era: During World War II, lavish white wedding dresses were not readily available. As soldiers and their sweethearts rushed to the altar to exchange their vows, they did not care what they wore if they could say they were husband and wife. Once the war was over, the traditional material associated with wedding gowns came back into popularity.

  • Global influences: Many brides from Pakistan, Vietnam and China maintain their colourful style for their special day. Instead of the white dress, you will often see brides of these cultures opt for bright and vibrant dresses that bring out the best of their personality and heritage.

Prepare for Your Visit to JK Bridal Couture

There are many things that you can do before your appointment to our Brisbane bridal shop. A few examples include:

  • Have something to eat: Although every bride wants to look slim and beautiful on their wedding day, when you shop for your dress, make sure that you eat before your appointment. The last thing that you want is to get frustrated during your appointment because you feel a combination of frustration and hunger. Eating something small can go a long way towards having a pleasurable experience.

  • Do some research: One of the things you will have to settle on is a dress style. While we are happy to show you any of our dresses, we invite you to let us know if you have a personal preference regarding the dress neckline or style. Try to look through some of our examples before your appointment to make the most of your time.

  • Avoid wearing too much makeup: While we understand that you want to look beautiful on your wedding day, we suggest that you avoid the urge to come to your appointment in your wedding day makeup. Some makeup can leave permanent marks on the dress which ruins them for future brides.

  • Plan out your day: We want to ensure that you are completely satisfied with your wedding dress in preparation for your big day. So, if you are thinking of wearing heels or shapewear, ensure you wear your favourite pair of heels and/or shapewear to your appointment, as it may alter the feel or fitting of your dress.
